I'm a member of the media myself but I'm increasingly exasperated by the behaviour of some footballing experts who have clearly become bored with football. What other explanation can there be when the experts - Messrs Gray and Green especially - have so little interest in a thrilling game like today's between Man Utd and Tottenham that they have to obsess about the referreeing? Having listened to excellent Radio 5Live commentary, I was forced to listen to Green's harsh northern Irish accent for the last 22 minutes. Within 2 minutes of taking the air he'd reminded us of how bad Rob Styles was in a Chelsea match last week and how he normally likes Howard Webb (I'm sure Webb's breathing a big sigh of relief at that news Greenie) but that the decisions not to award penalties to Man Utd were highly questionable.
Mr Green, you were 100 yards from the action, watching through a thicket of like-minded football hacks in the press box and you had a crap view. Even Webb, 15 yards away, had difficulty seeing. But the television cameras, after several replays and using high tech equipment, showed us that Wes Brown did not use his arm to stop the ball but his ribcage. No penalty. Martin Jol unsurprisingly saw the ball hit Brown's arm but let's give the intelligent Dutch manager a break this week.
Once again Mr Green, either commentate on the football or maybe it's time to start thinking of the nice big Beeb pension scheme.
