"Regarding Law 11 (Offside), the wording of the Interpretation of the Laws of the Game and Guidelines has been amended to clarify the situation where a defending player leaves the field of play placing an attacking player in an offside position. The new wording reads as follows: “Any defending player leaving the field of play for any reason without the referee’s permission shall be considered to be on his goal line or touchline for the purposes of offside until the next stoppage of play.”
FIFA's rule-making body IFAB, meeting in Belfast at the weekend, moved quietly to correct ana anomaly in the Laws of the Game after an incident during the Netherlands v Italy game at Euro 2008, when an offside Ruud Van Nistelrooy goal was allowed to stand because a player was lying injured two yards behind the goal-line and - according to the ref - involved in play.
Law 11 on offside made no mention of this situation but Fifa has now fallen into line with American authorities, who already include these instructions in their version of the laws. Better late than never!!
