While I was eating a late night dinner with colleagues in a restaurant in the centre of Mexico City, a few hundred yards away, one of the country's best footballers, Salvador Cabana - a recent target of Steve Bruce and Sunderland - was starting a long night of partying after his team America had lost 2-0. While I made it back to my hotel safely, Cabana never made it home. At 5.15am he went to the toilets of the bar and came out on a stretcher with a bullet in his head. Cabana is still alive in a hospital bed but there can't be much prospect of him ever playing again, as the bullet is still embedded in his skull. Cabana was looking forward to turning heads for his native Paraguay at this sumer's World Cup and the very real prospect of a major Premier League team moving in for the prolific striker.
Mexico City is a stunning and huge place, full of atmosphere, fun and noise. But with 20 million people living here, it's also a very violent city, as Cabana discovered. No-one yet knows the reason two men attacked him.
