Where it all started to go wrong for Stuart Attwell
This is really where it all started to go pear-shaped for Attwell, this astonishing decision that he has to take full responsiblity for, even though the initial decision is given by his assistant. Attwell, should have had no problem realising the assistant had made an awful mistake. I can imagine a situation where a 26-year-old Attwell, lacking in confidence, decides he's made an awful howler and missed a goal that has been spotted by his older and more experienced colleague. It's an awful mistake, admittedly, but it really shouldn't have defined Attwell's career.
One thought that does spring to mind. Did any of the Reading players tell the officials the ball had not gone into the goal? Unsurprisingly not.

Atwell was groomed to be the refs young ref poster boy. To say, look, you can ref in the Premier League befoe you're 30, hell, even at 25! The problem is, and I'm a football supporter not a ref or player, Atwell always appeared aloof and made very high profile mistakes.
If you add that together Young + Error-prone + Aloof you have someone decidedly unpopular. Compare and contrast against Michael Oliver who doesn't appear aloof at all, hasn't made many high profile errors that I can recall and is younger than Atwell.
Atwell really doesn't stand to comparison at all and hopefully his demotion will allow him to gain some humility and learn the game which he so clearly does need to do!
