Huth should have thought first to avoid red card

Robert Huth has been around the top levels of the game for long enough to know when it's a good time to slide his massive frame into a challenge and when it's wise to stay on your feet.

On Saturday, Stoke's Huth, rampaging through the Sunderland defence in search of an equaliser, decided to slide in on a snow-covered pitch. Admittedly his studs were not showing, but Huth is a giant and likely to cause serious injury to an opponent if he smashes into him at full speed. Sunderland's James Meyler was forced to leap into the air to escape injury, but the damage was done. The German had shown no thought for whether his challenge could cause serious injury. The fact that it didn't is irrelevant. The lack of care is enough.
What did happen was that Meyler, having avoided the foul, then rolled around as if his leg had been broken by Huth. He cheated to try and get Huth sent off. He wasn't injured and was up on his feet a couple of minutes later.
Really, Meyler should have been yellow carded, but Huth's red was indeed justified.
