With the score still 0-0, a Tottenham goal would have been crucial. The ball fired towards the Manchester United goal but Adebayor was in the way.
He stopped the ball with his stomach and as it fell to the ground, his left arm dropped to guide the ball in the direction that enabled him to backheel the ball into the goal.
It all happened in a flash, but Atkinson was perfectly positioned, about 20 yards away, to spot the handball. There's little doubt that Adebayor moved his arm to guide the ball, rendering him guilty of handball.
The goal was disallowed and Man United went on to make it look easy.
Just don't blame Atkinson.
