Mark Clattenburg is an exciting refereeing talent but even he stands in the unforgiving spotlight of scrutiny every time he takes charge of a premiership match. I imagine he'll be getting a phone call today and that he might find himself consigned to the lower depths of the Championship for a week or two after Saturday's derby between Everton and Liverpool.
Firstly, I believe Clattenburg may well have got a decision spot on that most pundits believe he got wrong. In the last minute, with Everton battling desparately for an equaliser, Jamie Carragher apparently dragged down Joleon Lescott in the penalty area. Or did he? Television pictures suggest a penalty, but it is quite possible that Lescott hurled himself backwards against Carragher. It is a trick that a good referee is aware of.
That said, Clattenburg made an error that has been interpreted as something very serious. Awarding a penalty against Everton's Tony Hibbert, Clattenburg was holding a yellow card in his hand. Steven Gerrard approached him, said something and Clattenburg put his yellow away and took out his red card. Probably the right decision but it looked awful. Why was he holding the yellow in his hand at all if he did not intend to use it?
Then, he failed to send off Dirk Kuyt for serious foul play for a flying, two-footed challenge that Phil Neville only avoided because he leapt out of the way. I believe Neville would have been very seriously injured if Kuyt had made contact. Yet Clattenburg only showed him a yellow card - inexplicable.
