There's almost always a flash point during a match. They can happen at any stage, but usually involve a foul, a tussle, some pushing and shoving and, if you're unlucky, blows.
So it's always good for a referee to show players clearly what they can or cannot do. After just 90 seconds, a centre-half clattered through the back of an opponent, sending player and ball flying.
Note to defenders: The argument, "but I got the ball ref" doesn't wash when the player you've tackled is laying on the ground with blood seeping through his socks.
So I yellow carded the defender and it helped a lot. I had the feeling players knew that they would get into trouble for that type of violent challenge and behaved themselves.
The match was a cracker, played at high speed. There were some minor clashes but nothing serious and certainly nothing like that second minute challenge.
