I was surprised to see the manager of the team I was reffing was the nurse from my local doctor's surgery, who has often had the misfortune to treat my piffling ailments, mainly a troublesome ingrowing toenail. We chatted before the match and it was a pleasure to see a woman managing, probably the only female manager in the Maidstone Saturday league, as far as I'm aware.
Her team, as it turned out, represented her well. They were well behaved and civil throughout the match.
But as I walked towards the centre circle before the match, her comment chilled my blood. "Give us a few decisions ref. You never know when you might need your prostate examining."
I looked back, anxiously. Luckily for me, she was smiling!
