Here's a quandary - answers please

Right, what would you do in this situation?

Team A scores a goal. Team B takes the restart, not particularly quickly. As ref, I'm in position in Team A's half about 10-15 yards in from the touchline. The ball is passed directly to a Team B striker, who hoofs the ball goal-bound.

As the ball is in the air, a Team A player shouts, "Oy Ref, he's getting treated". A quick look behind me confirms that a Team A player is being treated by the substitute/physio about 5 yards in from the touchline. I quickly look back at play and see the ball flying towards the goal. The goalkeeper misses the ball completely and it dribbles into the goal. Team A go bananas with me, saying the goal should not stand.

What do you think I did? And what do you think I ought to have done?

Hmm, interesting call. I wouldn't personally stop play at this point, but by law players can not be treated by physio on the field of play whilst the ball is in play.

However, they didn't ask your permission nor inform you the player was down so how were you to know? I'd have a word with the physio - make sure I know. I'd also allow the goal. If they don't tell you, that's their own problem.

Did you manage to blow as soon as you saw the physio on the pitch? Thats what I would have done, and as long as the ball hasnt entered the net before you blew, then no goal.

In which case, the law is very clearly on your side.

If the ball is in the net before you blow, then it's much more tricky, but as long as the presence of the physio didnt influence the game at that time, it's easier to give the goal.

I reckon you gave the goal and used a bit of savvy....ok in Law not correct but ...

I gave the goal, going on the assumption that the attacking team should not be penalised for an offence committed by the other team. My decision to allow it enraged the defending team and cards of various colours ensued. I also accept that I should have spotted the physio was on the FOP. I should also have booked the physio (he was actually a sub) nut didn't. I was in danger of filling my notebook up!
