Should Carlton Cole's goal against Man City have been disallowed for dangerous play? Was Vassell offside? Phil Dowd was given the traditional savaging by Andy "it wasn't like that in my days" Gray and even Crotian coach Slaven Bilic said he felt the City striker should have been penalised for offside.
As for Cole, his boot was definitely high as he performed his dramatic overhead kick. Micah Richards dipped (bravely) his head a little to try to prevent the goal.
These are the Laws of the Game. "Playing in a dangerous manner is defined as any action that, while trying to play the ball, threatens injury to someone ... It is committed with an opponent nearby and prevents the opponent from playing the ball for fear of injury. The action only becomes an offence when an opponent is adversely affected. A scissors or bicycle kick is poermissible provided that, in the opinion of the referee, it is not dangerous to an opponent."
So according to the laws of the game, Mr Dowd got this one wrong.
