FIFA blocks off managers' replay route

The sight of managers hunched over a television screen immediately after an important incident was never too edifying and FIFA has quietly solved the problem, ruling at a meeting earlier this month that televisions are not allowed in technical areas.
Managers have been watching replays on television and heaping abuse on referees based on that replay, assuming - wrongly - that television replays tell the whole story and that the referee has made a mistake. Television camera angles tell different stories. Last night's incident involving Chelsea's Mikel was a case in point. From the referee's angle it was a clear trip by the Manchester City defender. From the camera behind the goal, however, the picture was very different and appeared to indicate that there had hardly been any contact at all.
It's up to the referee to make the call. And he only has one set of eyes. It's up to defenders to stay on their feet in the penalty area, especially in an age when players go to ground at the brush of a feather.
