What a decision

In his dotage, Graham Poll can look back on the last English Premier Legaue match he refereed and press replay as often he likes on the decision of the season, when he waved away appeals for a West Brom penalty when it appeared that one of their strikers had been brought down by a Derby defender.
Live, the decision was a stone-wall penalty. Even in several replays it appeared certain that contact was made with the attacker and not the ball. But slow it right down and use a certain camera and, there you are, the defender gets a big toe nail on the ball before he makes any contact with the attacker. The ball has been touched but does not deviate much.
No, Poll's decision was a cracker. Standing directly behind the play about 15 yards away, he had put himself in just about the only position where he could make the right call.
