Oh Dear, Dear, Dear, Dear

What a catastrophic day for assistant referees. Two really, really bad decisions affected the outcome of two massively important World Cup matches. The mistakes happened at crucial times of the game, when England were 2-1 down and chasing the game and Mexico were battling to hold a rampant Argentina a couple of hours later.
And they weren't incredibly hard decisions. The Uruguayan assistant was about 10 metres off the goal line when Lampard's sweet lob bounced down behind the goal-line. There were no other players blocking his view and his angle of sight was perfect. Referee Jorge Larrionda undoubtedly asked his assistant whether the ball was over the line. The answer he got was terribl;y costly for England. 2-2 at half time and who knows what the final result would have been.
Poor old Roberto Rosetti was a strong candidate to ref the World Cup final when his assistant, Mr Espinoza, failed to spot that there was not a signle defender between Carlos Tevez and the goal-line when the Argentine headed the ball in. Really, a pretty straightforward decision.
A grim day for us refs.
