Aussie League Grand Final 95th min pen disaster for ref

Oh dear. It's every referee's nightmare. It's the fifth minute of time added on in the final of the game to decide the A-League champions. The Brisbane Roar have pulled level five minutes from time and then Besart Berisha took an almighty tumble in the penalty area. Ref Jarred Gillett immediately pointed to the spot and Berisha scored the league-winning penalty.

In real time, it's not at all surprising that Gillett gave the penalty. It really looks as if Perth's Liam Miller has clipped Berisha, who then had an almighty airshot and tumbled to the ground. Replays show pretty conclusively, however, that there was no or absolutely minimal contact and that Berisha tripped himself before missing the ball.
I'm pretty sure Berisha's tumble was accidental. It doesn't look deliberate and he had a clear chance of scoring from 14 yards out.
Reaction in Australia has been vengeful. Gillett's wikipedia entry was taken down after being filled with insulting expletives. OK, so it wasn't, perhaps, that wise to appoint a referee for Brisbane vs Pert Grand Final who hails from brisbane and whose partner works in Brisbane's media department.
Australian referees' chief Mark Shield, himself a fine international referee just a few years ago, defended Gillett. "My very first instinct was (it was a) penalty at the time ... Like everyone else, I've had a look the replay and there's some inconclusive angles but there's one particular angle that shows, in my view, that there was enough contact to warrant a penalty given."
