Terry's is an ugly world - 4 game ban is not enough

And I say that as an ardent Chelsea fan.
But more than a Chelsea fan, I'm a football fan. And the sport is what counts, not the club.

Civility cannot simply be cast aside like an unwanted gift.
There is little doubt that, at the moment, there are no limits to the crassness and obscenity of  some players.
There's no excuse for breaking all the rules of civilised society, as Terry - and others - have done with increasing frequency. Terry's not alone in behaving appallingly, but he's one of the most shocking.
He's a gifted footballer who has been excellent for both Chelsea and England.  But that does not excuse his contempt for normal standards of behaviour.
What's even more depressing is the level of the argument that led to Terry's outburst at Anton Ferdinand. Terry covers his nose to pretend that Ferdinands's breath smells? Good God! Ferdinand mentions an alleged affair between Terry and the girlfriend of one of his teammates? So Terry comes up with a retort that manages to be offensive on so many levels, using the f word, the c word and the word black.
The context is in many ways irrelevant. He used the words.
But in the wider context, football is killing itself with this kind of behaviour.
Players cannot continue behaving like porn stars high on coke or ecstasy, dumping all social norms to feed their voracious appetites.
I think that's what the FA is having to tiptoe around and is trying to say to footballers. Just be a little more humble and modest and behave like normal human beings. That's all.
